First edition, folio, pp. xii, [2], 270; engraved frontispiece and 64 engravings, some double-page; three-quarter brown morocco over purple cloth; gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments, gilt-lettered direct in 1, marbled endpapers and edges; a touch of edgewear; lacking a flyleaf, a few plates closely trimmed with the occasional small loss, occasional light spotting, but still very good and sound. The text is a collection and expansion of material that had previously been published in the journal Engineering. "It is hoped that this collection of loose papers will be found to present to the metallurgist something similar to the service which a systematically arranged sketch book of machinery offers to the mechanical engineer." The work also “reviews the state and progress of the manufacture during the years 1867 and 1868, and descriptions of many of the principal iron and steel works in Great Britain and on the continent.”.
