The eclectic journal of medicine. Vol. 1, nos. 1-3 and 5

[Philadelphia]: 1836-7. 12mo, pp. 1-36, 37-72, 73-108, 145-180; bound with fragments of a number of other medical titles, which were apparently included with the journal. Including: [Armstrong, John. Lectures on the Morbid anatomy, nature, and treatment, of acute and chronic diseases. Philadelphia: 1837.] Pp. 14-624, starting from the beginning of the main text without preliminaries, divided into three parts bound after nos. 1-3, and lacking pp. 625-387, which was likely distributed with no.4, not present here. According to the Journal, this large excerpt was sent to subscribers before the edition was independently printed from the same plates by Haswell and Barrington. "The publication of Armstrong's work will be concluded in the next number of the Library." ... "We have already borne strong testimony in favor of the lectures of Doctor Armstrong... by our being the first to introduce his work to the notices and perusal of the American professional reader, through the pages of the 'Library.' The volumes now before us are the same text, literatim et verbatim, as that which is already before our readers, with the addition of an introduction..." Cordasco identifies the Haswell and Barrington edition as the second American after Desilver, Thomas and Co. [Johnstone, James. A therapeutic arrangement and syllabus of materia medica. Philadelphia: 1837.] Pp. 25-71, [1]. The first half of the volume was likely provided with no. 4 and is not present here. From the same plates as the first American published by Haswell, Barrington and Haswell. Curling, Thomas Blizard. A treatise on tetanus, being the essay for which the Jacksonian Prize, for the year 1834, was awarded, by the Royal College of Surgeons, in London. Philadelphia: Haswell, Barrington, and Haswell, 1837. Pp. 126, [1]. Complete. [Marshall, John. Practical observations on diseases of the heart, lungs, stomach, liver, etc. etc. occasioned by spinal irritation and on the nervous system in general, as a source of organic disease. Philadelphia: 1837.] Pp. [13]-40. Without preliminaries or pp. 14-111. From the same plates as the first American by Haswell, Barrington and Haswell. Possibly to be continued with no. 6. The whole bound in half calf over marbled boards, gilt ruled spine with morocco label; boards toned, joints starting, first and last 50 pages tide-stained, good. The eclectic journal of medicine published four volumes between 1836-1840 before ceasing publication. It is mostly comprised of reviews of medical literature. Other copies inspected appear to have removed the accompanying "Library" items, or moved complete titles to the end of the volume, but this book appears to keep each section with the issue that it accompanied. Cordasco 30-0026 (Armstrong), 30-0524 (Johnstone), 30-0233 (Curling). Item #58669
