One-page A.L.s. to Lieutenant David Conner ordering him to arrest Sailing Master Carleton for refusing to obey orders

Aboard the U.S. Ship Ontario at New York: October 3, 1817. 4to, 16 lines, approx. 75 words; address panel and docket ("Order from Capt. Biddle to bring S.M. Carleton on board the Ontario") on integral leaf; previous folds, lightly toned; very good. "Sailing Master Carleton having acquainted me that he will not obey my order to him to repair on board this ship, which order from me was accompanied by an order from the Hon. Secretary of the Navy you are directed & required by me to go ashore & take with you such midshipmen as may be necessary bring M. Carleton on board using force if necessary." Biddle (1783-1848) was about to set sail on an important mission the very next day, October 4. He was to deliver Judge John Prevost to Lima and Valparaiso as special agent to Chile and Peru, then proceed to the Pacific Northwest, at the mouth of the Columbia River, to formally take over the Oregon Country for the United States, which was completed the following year.
