One-page autograph letter signed to Lieutenants Joseph Myers and Wm. D. Newman, Sailing Master G. G. Williamson, and Purser And’w J. Watson

On board the U.S. Ship Lexington at Rio de Janeiro: August 12, 1833. Folio, previous folds, very good. "You will hold a strict and careful survey on all articles which were in the store previous to the arrival of the Brig Serene, ascertaining the state, condition and quantities of such as shall be condemned and also the probable cause of the deterioration of such as you shall condemn and report the result to me." Woolsey (1782-1838) joined the Navy as a midshipman in 1800 and served on the frigate Adams during the Quasi-War, and on Boston, Adams, New York and Chesapeake in the Mediterranean during the Barbary Wars returning home as a lieutenant in the Constitution. He commanded the sixteen-gun brig Oneida and the schooner Sylph with distinction on Lake Ontario in the War of 1812. Promoted to captain in 1816 he commanded Constellation in the West Indies from 1824 to 1827 and the Navy Yard at Pensacola before assuming command of the Brazilian Squadron from 1832 to 1834 in the rank of commodore.
