First collected edition, 4 volumes in 2, 8vo, plus quarto atlas; frontispiece portrait after Flaxman and folding facsimile in text volumes; atlas with 14 preliminary leaves, frontispiece portrait after Joshua Reynolds, and 59 (of 60) engraved plates - lacking plate 52: “Two specimens of Siren, or Mud Iguana from South Carolina.” Nice enough set in recent quarter green morocco over green cloth sides, gilt lettering direct on spines. Bookplate of James Mead, Curator Emeritus of Marine Mammals at the Smithsonian. Hunter (1728-1793) was an eminent anatomist and surgeon whose work on gun-shot wounds and inflammation brought him early prominence.
