Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson, 1847. 4to, pp. [16], 40, 4 (testimonials); engraved frontispiece of the author; 1 colored anatomical lithograph with five flaps; 4 wood-engraved illustrations in the text; original leather-backed pictorial boards; some dampstaining and foxing, more prevalent on the pastedowns and endpapers; neatly rebacked. Bookplate of James Mead, Curator Emeritus of Marine Mammals at the Smithsonian. First published a year earlier but without the testimonials. The anatomical lithograph is hand-colored with five folding flaps. It was printed by Wagner & McGuigan of Philadelphia. The print depicts the head and torso of a man in profile. The flaps open to reveal detailed illustrations of the cardiovascular, nervous, and digestive system. Frederick Hollick (1818-1900) was an American physician known for his progressive attitudes towards sexual health and education. He garnered a reputation for delivering informational lectures on sexual function and pleasure, and was charged with obscenity twice in Philadelphia for his use of an anatomically correct papier-mâché model of the female body in his instruction. The testimonials in this book make reference to the model, and the trials, and the dedication is offered to "all those ladies and gentlemen who, with generous zeal, came to my assistance when I was subjected to an unscrupulous and illegal persecution, for attempting to destroy the existing monopoly of scientific knowledge." Not in Cordasco. Item #59929
