Bookplate of James Mead. "Bibliographically the book presents one of the most difficult problems I have ever undertaken and even today, after years of study and comparison am I still unconvinced that I have been able to make any definite forward strides" (Merle Johnson, A Bibliography of the Works of Mark Twain, as quoted by BAL). BAL adds: "A continuation of the study leaves little to add to Johnson's statement.
