New York: Asa K. Butts, 19 Dey St., n.d., [ca. 1877]. Broadside prospectus (approx. 12" x 9½"), likely a proof, advertising a yet-to-be-named weekly paper, "something like Mr. Shupe's Advocate, with its Quakerism and other irrelevant matter left out, and the clearest, most liberal Radicalism of the day put in - devoted to popular science, to social, religious, moral, political, financial, educational, sanitary, hygienic, labor, land, and all other sound reforms." The broadside solicits a total of $1000 for the start-up, with an incomplete line for adding what had already been raised. This copy with manuscript annotations by the publisher, A. K. Butts. He asks for the initial line to be "not half so bold" and in red pencil has left a note for a W. Wakeman: "Can't you call? My clerk is away and I can't leave. I'm very anxious to consult with you about this project which is in a very encouraging situation." Reference to an ad in The Evolution suggests a date of around 1877. The resulting paper was possibly The Man, published by Butts starting in 1878. Accompanied by a second broadsheet prospectus for the same (approx. 10" x 6") with a text on the verso regarding "Co-Operative Publishing Some tearing at old folds, resulting in minor loss of type but not of meaning; all else very good.
