Illustrations of dissections in a series of original coloured plates the size of life, representing the dissection of the human body

London: James Walton, 1867. Large folio rebound without a title page (only the preface and plate list are present) into a large 4to format, but with the full complement of 58 double-page color lithograph plates; without the supplemental text volume. The plate list with short tears at the folds, the plates with light toning and spotting; the spine is perished but the binding is sound. Inscription on front free endpaper of "J[ames] M. Mead 5 X 07 ex J[ohn]. E. Heyning." James Mead is Curator Emeritus of Marine Mammals at the Smithsonian. "These anatomical plates exemplify the method of dissecting practiced in University College, London; and they are designed to serve both as patterns for the Student to copy in his dissections, and as aids to him in after-study ... The illustrations comprise views of the head and neck, the upper limb, the perinaeum, the abdominal parietes, the pelvis, and the lower limb." The drawings are from nature and on stone by Mr. Ford, from dissections by Professor Ellis, and form a separate volume in imperial folio (here rebound in quarto). Printed in colors by W. West. "The plates are exceptional for accuracy and clarity. They are also exceptional for their aesthetic depiction of the dead" (Anatomy as Art: the Dean Edell Collection, No. 197). Item #60104
