The Oriental collection of W. T. Walters, 65 Mt. Vernon Place
Baltimore: [privately printed at the Press of Isaac Friedenwald], 1884. 8vo, pp. xv, [1], 127, [1], [7] leaves of plates; original limp brown cloth lettered on gilt on upper cover and spine, a.e.g. Ownership signature of Laura Van Alstyne. Sections include Chinese, Japanese, and Ancient & European pottery, porcelain, jade, lacquer, swords, bronzes, painting, carvings, etc. A wealthy railroad executive, Walters (1820-94) began collecting paintings at an early age, eventually amassing a significant collection of contemporary French paintings, especially during a lengthy stint in Paris (1861-65). "His paintings, in addition to an important collection of Eastern ceramics, crowded his Baltimore home ... These collections were enormously enlarged by his son, who at death bequeathed them, with a new gallery [i.e., the Walters Art Gallery], to the city of Baltimore" (DAB). The present volume is not, as the title might suggest, a description of Walters' collection, but, rather, a brief history of Chinese and Japanese pottery and porcelain, with a list of relevant literature.
