An account of the origin of the prima donna, operatic conventions, the prima donna as a type, and anecdotal biographies of famous divas, including Sophie Arnould, Maria Malibran, Angelica Catalini, Jenny Lind, and Christine Nilsson, among many others. This is Sutherland's sequel, of sorts, to his book on modern opera and lyrical drama published in 1881. Item #60605
