First edition, fukurotoji binding, approx. 8.5" x 6"; 3 volumes, 16, 11; 12-21, [9]; 31, [1] leaves; 22 pages of illustrations, showing a variety of whales and aquatic mammals, whaling implements, and a one-page map of the entire Arctic coastline through to Spain; original blue paper wrappers, printed title labels on upper covers; very light wrinkling, ownership stamps of the collector Ichiro Hidaya among others, very good and clean. Fujikawa Sankei was a pioneer of the early Meiji fishing industry. He was trained in naval warfare before learning to hunt whales, attempted to establish a whaling business that employed only foreigners, and after its failure taught at fishery schools and published multiple books on the industry. The text of his Whaling Illustrated covers types of whales, their anatomy, hunting methods of both the Japanese and the West, and a survey of marine life near Hokkaido. Item #60670
