Photo album of a 1953 missionary family in Japan

Hiroshima: 1953. Pictorial lacquer photo album (approx. 7¾" x 11"), containing 79 photographs (mostly 3¼" x 2¼" but a few larger) on 21 pages, each with an ink caption or a typed mounted caption; painted boards with a depiction of Japan, Korea, and Mt. Fuji, with faux mother-of-pearl onlays, all edges gilt; a couple of small scratches, but overall near fine. Inscribed on the endpaper "From Pastor and Mrs. Edwin Swanson / Japan / for the archives." A collection of nicely executed domestic photos recording daily life and the surrounding environment of an American missionary family ca. 1952-1953. The photos depict shrines, festivals, neighbors, city structures, the Swanson's young son, Paul, visitors (including E. Stanley Jones, the theologian, author, and Methodist Christian missionary), and many of the people who made up the missionary community in the Mihara neighborhood outside Hiroshima. Several views of Tokyo, Nikko, and Yokohama are included. According to son Paul, the Swansons were American Baptists who engaged in the act of "church planting," and a number of the photos show the construction and dedication of the Mihara Lutheran Church, a wooden structure we could not find standing today.
