Shirley died in 1666 and in 1726 Jenkin Thomas Philipps published this book which he edited from Shirley's grammatical writings. "Philipps was tutor to the children of George II, and, as the title page of the Essay indicates, this particular work was designed as a text-book for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland ...
