Pelliot was not the first westerner to be given access to the to the Dunhuang caves and their trove of manuscripts, but he was one of the first who was fluent enough in Classical Chinese and other Central and East Asian languages to make a proper analysis of their contents. His account of the material there was so specific and detailed that he was accused of inventing and forging information, but was vindicated when Aurel Stein published his own account of Dunhuang.
