Milano: Arnoldo Mondadori, 1937. First Italian edition of Wheatley's Murder off Miami (London: published for the Crime-Book Society by Hutchinson & Co., 1936); 4to, 138 leaves printed from typescript; 33 unnumbered leaves of plates with tip-ins, facsimiles, plans, portraits, etc.; original wrappers printed in red and black, post-bound; very good. A translation of the author's note: "We are pleased to present, with this issue, a work that we believe constitutes an entirely new departure in the field of crime literature. Telegrams, original manuscripts, photographs, police reports, identity cards, and even material clues such as: locks of hair, a match, a piece of blood-stained curtain, etc., are collected in this file in the order in which they were received by the Police Directorate: it is therefore the complete file of the crime exactly as it appeared to the Police Officer who solved it, without any extraneous or false element that could mislead him; the photographs of the protagonists here take the place of the descriptions of the characters contained in ordinary mystery books ... At the end of the 5th report, all the data for solving the mystery are in the possession of the investigating agent who, however, declares himself unable to solve it. It is then that he receives instructions for the arrest of the culprit from his superior who has never seen any of the people involved in the crime, but who has come to the exact solution based solely on the clues offered to him, just like the reader of this dossier." OCLC locates 3 copies in Italy and another in Switzerland. Item #63440
