Hansheng Magazine is an award-winning project dedicated to highlighting a specific aspect of Chinese cultural arts with each issue. It was founded in 1971 as the English magazine ECHO before shifting towards the Chinese-speaking audience, and was focused on preserving folk art, research, and high production values. This issue is dedicated to Ku Shulan, a designated UNESCO Master of China Folk Art and Crafts. She was born into an impoverished family, never learned to read or write and spent most of her life in obscurity, but was discovered in 1980 by a cultural survey on paper cutting. She has since become a national treasure, with her work being displayed in museums and exhibitions both in China and abroad. Item #63569
