No man's land 軍艦島 = No man's land: Gunkanjima
Tōkyō: Kōdansha, [2004]. First edition, folio, pp. 143, [1]; color photographs throughout; fine copy in original pictorial wrappers and publisher's wrap-around band. Gunkanjima (also known as Warship Island) is another name for Hashima, a partly artificially made island near the bay of Takashima-cho, Nagasaki Prefecture. Known for its coal reserves, the island slowly became dormant when Japan's energy policy shifted from coal to oil, ceasing entirely in 1974 when the mines closed for good. Shinichiro Kobayashi (born October 1956) is a Japanese photographer, and "the leading practitioner if not the founder of the ever-popular 'Ruins' or 'Urban Exploration' genre of photography".
