This pronouncer uses two methods of spelling. The first, Gwoyeu Romatzyh, is a romanization system that embeds tonal information into the spelling itself. For example, Mha and Ma are first and second tone respectively. Although it was established as the official romanization system of the Chinese government, it was considered too complex for most prospective adopters and too focused on the Beijing accent.
