Lillie's stories about Indians
New York: Geo. A. Leavitt, n.d. Only edition (?), 16mo, pp. 36; integral wood-engraved frontispiece, wood-engraved vignette title page, and 32 wood engravings throughout; original purple cloth (similar to the RH cloth as illustrated in BAL, volume I); light rubbing, small loss at fore-edge of rear pastedown; very good. Produced for a juvenile audience. AAS suggests a date 1867-1869 and notes that the work was attributed to Lillie Day in a Mills College record. But the record "does not contain a note justifying the attribution. Lillie Day was not found in NUC pre-1956, or in available biographical sources. George A. Leavitt is listed in New York City directories as an individual publisher between 1867 and 1869" (AAS). In fact, Lillie Day's name is stamped on the spine in gilt, along with the title, "Stories about Indians," together with floral ornaments. The illustrations, while somewhat crude, are actually rather compelling. Not common. OCLC locates 5 copies: Mills College (attribution probably correct), San Francisco State, Univ. of Florida, AAS and Western Reserve Hist. Soc. Item #64246
