First and only edition, 2 volumes in 1, 8vo, pp. [8], (includes 4 p. subscriber's list), 15, [1] ad, unpaginated lexicon in double column; [1] ads; engraved frontispiece and 23 engraved plates; full calf, spine with raised bands; joints tender, upper hinge starting, last gathering extended, else a very good, sound copy. With an attractive calligraphic ex-libris of Walter Ward on the first flyleaf. Contains biographical sketches and a number of encyclopedic entries. The Lives of the Poets (included in the lexicon proper) are not insubstantial. The plates are mostly of a scientific nature (Smeaton's air-pump, azimuth compass, new type of beehive, etc.) and the one showing electrical apparatus includes a likeness of Franklin.
