Leipzig: printed for the heir of the late Mr. Gross, 1736. First German edition of Bailey and one of the rarest of all Bailey dictionaries; 8vo, pp. [18], [818]; lexicon in double column; engraved portrait frontispiece of Bailey by [Johann Christoph] Sysang, German and English title pages; contemporary full calf, red morocco label on spine; occasional dampstaining, tear in the fore-margin of X4 (no loss); last leaf with marginal wear and some loss to the blank margin, and also with a small tear in the gutter (no loss of text); good and sound. Entry words in English, with equivalents variously in English, French, and German. The appendix at the back is "added, for the most part, from Mr. Thomas Dyche's spelling dictionary." A German translation, with the addition of a German vocabulary, of Bailey's The Universal Etymological Dictionary of 1727. A German counterpart wasn't issued until 1739. This is the first edition of any of Bailey's dictionaries to contain a portrait. Interestingly, no British edition of any Bailey contained a portrait, only the German ones.
