Small 8vo, pp. 168; 8 vignette woodcuts illustrative of the fables; original calf-backed paper-covered boards; some peeling of the paper, leaves C1-C3 with tears in the lower gutter affecting a letter or two (sense remains clear); still, this is a better than usual copy of Webster's much-used Speller. Originally published in 1783 as A Grammatical Institute, Part I, the title was changed to The American Speller in 1787. The text underwent a substantial revision by Webster in 1804.
