First edition thus, limited to 500 copies (this, no. 267); 8vo, pp. [4], x, [2], 132, [2]; portrait frontispiece, 3 plates and illustrations in the text; original brown cloth-backed cream paper-covered boards, lettered in black on upper cover; near fine throughout. "Designed at the Printing Office of Philip Reed, Chicago." The binding is by Elizabeth Kner. The first edition was a small privately printed edition of only 25 copies produced in 1907, and another 25 done in 1908. Adams, Herd, 1815: "This book tells of one of the first cattle drives north from Texas"; Graff 3314; Howes P469: "Ponting was prominent in the western cattle trade from 1848 to 1900; in 1854 he took Texas longhorns to New York."
