[N.p., n.d. ca. 1900]. Stab stitched book, 4 volumes and 16 juan, original title leaves, rebound in later drab paper wrappers; pages toned, very good. This title is listed under the Serica Project's list of Guangzhou mu yu shu (木魚書). Mu yu shu are lyric books for popular colloquial ballads. They were popular through the late 19th and beginning of the 20th century, were produced cheaply, and tended to reflect the local language, making them a source for local dialect. The subject matter tended to be political, with stories adapted from novels and other sources. Their regular use and low production quality meant that a relative few such books were able to survive in decent condition (Tian, "Exhibiting the Eclectic from Chinese History" on the Harvard website). No copies in OCLC (Hong Kong with a reprint), but with Tokyo Daigaku and the Bodleian (via David Helliwell's Serica Project) listing copies. Item #65783
