The corsair, a tale
London: printed by Thomas Davison, Whitefriars, for John Murray, Albemarle-Street, 1814. First edition, variant of the second issue, 8vo, pp. xi, [1], 100, [4]; original plain brown wrappers; slight curling of the edges and small chips from the spine ends, but still a very good, clean copy. The text ends at p. 100 (not 108 as in the second issue). Page 100 has no printer's imprint, nor does it have "The End." Wise notes: "A number of examples of the book exist which in common with those of the first issue, conclude with page 100, but are without the words "The End" and the printer's imprint. There can be no doubt these belong to the second issue, of which they represent an early variant ... After page 100 had been amended, and before the new half sheet was ready, the urgent demand for the book which we know existed compelled the printers to work off a number of copies of the revised Sig. H without waiting for the completion of the two forms with the additional six poems and sonnets, and hurriedly put copies with these amended sheets into wrappers" (Wise). Wise I, pp. 92-94.
