"As Scott explained to Byron the day after issue, this sketch was intended for Joanna Baille's forthcoming Collection of Poems (1823) but, as it soon 'ran out of bounds,' was now published separately. The author wished he could have dedicated it to Byron, 'your lordship being in lineal descent half a Gordon as I am a fourth part of a Swinton'."
