Inscribed "Charles W. Ames and Lady / from Lesley / Christmas, 1914." Charles Wilberforce Ames (1855-1921), a native Minnesotan, returned from Boston to St. Paul in 1882 and purchased an interest in the West Publishing Company, a publisher of law books. This association continued until his death in 1921. Under his guidance the company grew to be one of the largest publishers of law books in the U.S. Ames married Mary Lesley in 1883. They had six children, the first born of whom was Charles Lesley. Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts (1832-1914), was a British Victorian era general who became one of the most successful British military commanders of his time serving with distinction in India, Afghanistan, Abyssinia, and South Africa.
