Millar in the Strand, 1756. 4 volumes, 8vo, parallel text in Latin and English; 1 engraved plate; contemporary full calf, gilt-decorated spines in 6 compartments, maroon morocco labels in 1, sprinkled edges; upper joints cracked on volumes I, III, and IV, but still a very good, clean, and sound set. Bookplate in each volume of the Royal College of Physicians (with discreet release stamp), and a presentation on the front free endpaper of volume I: "The library Royal College of Physicians from Herbert R. Spencer, M.D. Dec. 1938." Spencer (1860-1941) was professor of obstetrics at University College London, and a noted medical historian. He wrote numerous articles and books and assembled an important collection of early writings on obstetrics. Volumes II - IV have different title pages: volume II: 'The odes, epodes, and Carmen Seculare of Horace...'; volume III: 'The satires of Horace...'; volume IV: 'The epistles and Art of Poetry of Horace...' 'The lyrical part of Horace can never be perfectly translated. Francis has done it the best. I'll take his five out of six against them all" (Samuel Johnson).
