First edition thus; square 12mo (approx. 6½"), pp. x, 192, [1]; 36 full-page illustrations on rectos and versos of 18 plates; original gray cloth stamped in black; some soiling, but generally very good, sound, and clean. Safford (1837-1890), a native of Athens, Georgia, was a missionary educator of women in Soochow (Suzhou), China. She wrote or translated a dozen or more books and pamphlets on hygiene, physiology, and the word of God, in a style that simple women could understand, and was the editor of the interdenominational magazine Woman’s Work in the Far East (see her entry in: Biographical Dictionary of Christian Missions, 1998). Based on the original work of Xiang Liu (77 BCE - 6 BCE), this was Safford's last book and published posthumously. Item #71024
