Mary Geraldine Guinness (1862-1949), often known as Mrs. Howard Taylor, was a British Protestant Christian missionary to China, and author of many missionary biographies on the history of the China Inland Mission. The Chinese scholar in question here is Xi Shengmo (Hsi Shêng-mo; ca. 1836–1896) also known as Pastor Hsi, a Chinese Christian leader, a one-time an opium addict and later a Confucian scholar.
