First edition, large 8vo, pp. [10], 142; mounted color frontispiece, 5 other mounted color illustrations, and 25 full-page text illustrations, plus other vignette illustrations in the text; original white cloth-backed blue pictorial boards stamped in gilt (faded to silver), printed blue labels on spine; a very good, sound, and clean copy preserving the front and back panels of the very uncommon dust jacket, the front with a tear and loss at the bottom edge. While working in Shanghai as a shipping agent Donnelly developed an interest and then expertise in native Chinese ships. He was also an accomplished nautical artist, and his books feature his paintings and ink sketches of various water craft in action. Item #73048
