This is an historical overview of overview of the 1953 Aceh Rebellion led by Islamic cleric Teungku M. Daud Beureueh (1899-1987), Aceh's most prominent Islamic religious leader, who led his Persatuan Ulama Seluruh Aceh (PUSA) against its principal opposition, the Dutch-supported hierarchy in its quest for religious tolerance of Islam and the implementation of Shari'ah law in Aceh.
