Axel. From the Swedish of Esaias Tegner. By R. G. Latham

London: T. Hookham, 1838. First edition in English, 8vo, pp. [4], 44; publisher's embossed presentation blindstamp in the title page, original plain paper wrappers with paper label on upper cover, advertisement slip tipped in at the back. From the library of George Stephens, the runic archaeologist, with his accession sticker on the back wrapper. Together with Tegner's masterpiece Frithjofs Saga, Axel is the poem on which this Swedish author's reputation is based. In 1838 Latham translated and edited, with Sir E. Creasey, both Frithiof's Saga and Axel. These were his first two books of many on philological subjects, including his famous History of the English Language (1841, 5th edition 1862); and his edition of Dr. Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language, which he largely rewrote. Nine in OCLC, only Harvard, Minnesota, and Wisconsin in the U.S. Item #7392
